LED TVs: Things to Know
LED TV is gradually becoming a household name amidst so many other kinds of Television in the market today. The different kinds of Television are manufactured with their peculiar and unique technology make-up. This technological in-built of these televisions are the key factor in the performance of these Televisions. LED TV is becoming very popular because of its high technology. For the purpose of lighting, LED TVs are made with Light-emitting diode which is the source of light. LED TVs are low in power consumption. It does not use mercury and has a higher image quality. Before committing your hard earned money in buying this product, there are some basic facts about LED TVs you need to know.
LED TVs are not new. LED TVs is not a new technology as the manufacturers wants to us believe. They have been in the market but in the form of LCD TVs with the back-lighting configured with LEDs instead of the known CCFL. LCDs are transmissive device made up of pixel and each pixel is illuminated from the back. With the introduction of some brands into the market last year, LED TVs became well known.
LED TVs backlight configurations Formerly, LED-based displays were backlit by what is called “full array” of LEDs behind the LCD. To create thinner TVs, the extra layer of LEDs needs to be eliminated and moved to the side of the display. With this type of backlighting, the LEDs are fixed at the four sides of the Television. Through the lightguides, light is projected to the middle of the Television. This is referred to as the edge-lit LED-based LCDs.
Local dimming Local dimming LED backlights have the capacity to dim or turn off individuals. All modern rear-placed, “full array” LED-based LCDs has a technology referred to as local dimming. This can be used to dim or brighten some portions of the backlight when they become brighter or darker. This ability to dim portions of the screen reduces the amount of light that emits from the darkened pixel. This results to a black that become darker and more real.
Edge-lit TVs are thinner but not uniform With the edge-lit configuration, a thinner LED TV is manufactured but the uniformity of the backlight is not guaranteed. With this configuration, taking up a white object makes the screen brighter while taking up a black object turns the screen edges lighter causing backlight non uniformity.
LED TV has a poor off-angle view. You get the best picture quality when viewing from the centre of Television. But shifting a little from this angle, you will notice a reduction in the image quality. This picture quality decrease will also occur if the LED TV is placed a little high or low. The backlight of the LED Television does not care of this off-angle viewing anomaly.
Efficiency of the Backlight. It has been said that the LED backlighting is low in power consumption; they are the most efficient flat screens available although the standard fluorescent backlighting is also getting more efficient. Analysis have shown that the screen size and brightness of the picture can affect power use greatly, but even the largest screen size LED TV saves barely a little in a year.
