How to make MiBox Passthrough Master Audio DTS HD Dolby TrueHD
I purchased the MiBox 16 AB (also called as Mibox 3 not the Mibox S as for most part they were the same and MiBox 3 costs lesser). I was playing around with the settings for a couple of days but was still unable to figure out how to make the MiBox passthrough Master Audio to my Pioneer receiver. There is no proper documantation from MI though the Box claims to play DTS and Dolby audio. After changing and testing lots of Android players of various versions including VLC, Kodi, NPlayer, MXPlayer, etc and fiddling with the MIBox Audio settings, I finally figured out a player and audio setting combination that successfully passes through the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio to my Pioneer.
First setting to adjust is to do with the Android TV Audio Settings. Under the Sound Setting s in the MiBox, set dynamic range control to LINE. LINE would passthrough whereas selection of RF option will downmix to stereo. Set Sound output to Auto, anything else will simply not pass through the master audio. Set DTS sounds to 20 or 30 percent, though I did not find much difference in setting it to 80 percent either.
The next thing to do is to fire up Kodi player. The version I had is called Leia v18.0. Navigate to the Audio Settings and choose the “Number of channels” as 7.1 or 5.1 dependent on your configuration. Choose “Output Configuration” as “Optimized”. Anything else will simply not passthrough. Scroll down further and under Audio Passthrough, turn on Audio Passthrough. Further select all formats your receiver is capable of handling.
That is it. Now turn off the MiBox and restart it. Go ahead and fire up your master audio files and you should be able to see them passed through and hear them from your receiver. I used HDMI to passthrough the audio but I assume it should be the same if an optical cable is used to passthrough surround sound.
