How I began to use SIP telephony?
The first time I came across VOIP six years ago, I dealt with cards. I used to make long-distance calls to Russia and Germany, the connection was unacceptable, the voice was being interrupted and I could hear constant screeching noises. That was worse than I expected.
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since that time. Channels have been widened. I tried using Skype and that appeared to be pleasing but a number of reasons made me think over an alternative.
Skype has certain drawbacks: 1. The protocol is closed, no alternative clients; 2. A p2p-based protocol, which means you could have outside traffic: if you pay your operator for every megabyte of the traffic, that outside traffic might turn out to be a considerable challenge for your wallet; 3. Skype’s services cost more than these of SIP operators for stationary and mobile phone calls; 4. All the Skype’s solutions as regards integration in the existing PBX have been lacking the necessary functions and haven’t been very user-friendly, whereas it’s not very practical to splash out on a separate mobile phone or computer for Skype’s sake only.
In addition to Skype, SIP is another option. SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. It is not a VOIP service but a way to control the information transmission sessions. Type of transmitted data is determined by a separate SDP (Session Description Protocol). It works in complex with SIP. More information can be found out at Wikipedia.
I haven’t considered all the hardware options, but there is quite a lot of them. Software options allowing one to use SIP are just as diverse as the hardware ones.
All today’s IP-PBX systems are SIP-compatible. Using SIP such giants as Cisco produce their own applications for big corporations and medium-sized firms.
I opted for my provided rather quickly. So I opted for UcallWeconn, as it comes up with just the service level one might expect from a company. UcallWeconn gives a common user an opportunity to use the services with the VISA advanced payment options, while firms have to make a contract, sign the SLA and pay the services on a bank-basis.
Another thing in favor of this particular provider is that it copes surprisingly well with providing the services for home Internet users, which means that they access the Internet via a domestic router substituting NAT.
